El título EL FESTÍN DURANTE LA PESTE está tomado de la pieza teatral en un acto de Alexander Pushkin (escrita en 1830), quien a su vez se basó en una escena del poema dramático "The city of the plague" del autor inglés John Wilson (1816). Más tarde, Cesar Cui (1900) y Sergei Prokofiev (1900) realizaron versiones para la ópera.

Sobre un escenario urbano, a la vista de la plebe diezmada por la peste, un grupo de aristócratas, clérigos, burgueses y altos funcionarios homenajean a sus amigos fallecidos, afectados también por la mortífera plaga, haciendo a la vez ostentación de sus riquezas y privilegios. Un mundo que toca a su fin, al que tratan de aferrarse con las tradiciones y el placer de los sentidos.

On an urban stage, a group of aristocrats, clergymen, bourgeois and high officials pay homage to their deceased friends, who are also affected by the deadly plague, while making ostentation of their riches and privileges . A world that comes to an end, to which they try to cling to the traditions and the pleasure of the senses.
